What is functional medicine, and how is it different from conventional medicine?
Functional medicine is not an alternative to conventional medicine. It is a way to organize clinical history and connect factors that are sometimes studied separately.

A systems-based view
Conventional medicine is essential for diagnosing disease, treating emergencies, prescribing medication and performing procedures. Functional medicine works within that framework and adds a question: which factors may be contributing to the onset or persistence of this problem?
Instead of treating every symptom as an isolated event, it reviews timing and relationships with sleep, food, stress, physical activity, digestive health, metabolism, medication, family history and exposures. Integration does not mean everything has one “root cause”; several factors often influence one another.
What happens during an evaluation
A functional evaluation begins with an extensive medical history and an organized review of previous studies. The team identifies gaps and selects tests only when they may change a clinical decision. More laboratory testing does not automatically mean better medicine.
The next step is a list of priorities. Some require conventional care or referral to a specialist; others may involve nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management or medical adjustments. A plan should be proportional, understandable and sustainable.
What it can and cannot promise
Functional medicine may support understanding of complex symptoms and coordinate interventions, but it cannot guarantee cures or replace emergency care. It also does not justify stopping medication without supervision.
A responsible approach acknowledges uncertainty, explains risk and reviews outcomes over time. At Essencia Azul every protocol requires prior medical evaluation and is designed according to individual medical judgment. Results may vary.
