IV therapy in Costa Rica: what it is, when it helps and what to expect

IV therapy is the administration of fluids, vitamins, minerals or other compounds directly into a vein. It can be useful support when there is a medical indication; it is not a universal energy shortcut.

Approximate reading time: 5 minutes.

What it is and how it works

IV therapy (also called vitamin drips or infusion therapy) delivers hydration, vitamins, minerals, amino acids or other compounds directly into a vein. Bypassing the digestive system allows concentrations that oral intake sometimes cannot reach.

That mechanism explains its usefulness in specific situations — dehydration, documented deficiencies, recovery in selected cases — but it does not make IV therapy a treatment for everything. The composition of a drip should answer a clinical question, not follow a menu.

When it makes sense and when it does not

It may be considered, according to individual medical judgment, for people with fatigue under evaluation, high physical demands, recovery after illness or laboratory-confirmed deficiencies. It can also be integrated as support within broader medical programs, after reviewing history, medication and contraindications.

It does not replace diagnosing the cause of fatigue or treating an underlying disease. Real risks exist — reactions, infection at the puncture site, volume overload, interactions — which is why medical indication and supervision are required. Be cautious with any “miracle drip” offer: results may vary.

How we do it at Essencia Azul

At our clinic in Nicoya, Guanacaste — within driving distance of Nosara, Sámara and Tamarindo — IV therapy always begins with a medical evaluation: clinical history, medication, goals and, when appropriate, studies such as the Essencia Scan or laboratory tests. Only then do we define whether an IV protocol adds value and with which composition.

Administration takes place under professional monitoring with tolerance follow-up. We provide care in Spanish and English, for peninsula residents and visitors alike. Prior medical evaluation is required, and results may vary from person to person.
